What is Self Talk?

What is “Self-Talk”?

Does anyone remember being told, ‘talking to yourself is the first sign of madness’? Well, if it is, we are all a little bit mad. But this is not the point. Talking to yourself is one of the ways we relate to our inner world and make sense of our experience. And we are doing this – all the time.

Self-Talk or said another way, the way we talk to ourselves is basically our “inner voice”, or the voice of our ‘mind’. It is the things we mostly say quietly to ourselves. It is a running dialogue that happens just outside of our awareness. Self Talk has an enormous impact on not just how we feel but also how we cope with the challenges live throws at us.

Self-Talk is basically your inner voice, the voice in your mind that says the things you don’t necessarily say out loud. We often don’t even realise that this running commentary is going on in the background, but our self-talk can have a big influence on how we feel about who we are.

Self Talk can be Positive and oriented towards finding solutions and creating order Or it can be Negative and oriented towards being critical to the point of destruction and thereby creating chaos. This would be unhelpful. Becoming Self Aware of exactly what you are saying to yourself is one way to begin transforming Negative Self Talk in to a more Positive form.
